Australia Welcomes Back Thomas & Friends for Summer Fun - Ipswich Workshops Rail Musuem

Holidaying from the Island of Sodor, the famous blue tank engine rolls into town for Australia's biggest Thomas and Friends event, Day out with Thomas 2012 at The Workshops Rail Museum from 26 December to 29 January 2012.

While on their summer holiday Down Under, Thomas and his friends Edward, Donald, Douglas, Lady, plus Annie & Clarabel can be found throughout the Museum.

Just as famous as Thomas and known for his firm but friendly manner, The Fat Controller is looking forward to meeting fans and telling stories of the cheeky but Really Useful Engine.

Director of The Workshops Rail Museum Andrew Moritz said the Museum is happy to host the summer event that brings smiles to many excitable youngsters.

"We're delighted to welcome back familiar faces and the next generation of Thomas fans to enjoy the summer holidays with the lovable engine," said Mr Moritz.

"Parents and their Thomas enthusiasts can enjoy various Thomas activities and the new movie, Day of the Diesels, in air conditioned comfort."

Young engineers can let off some steam with hands-on activities in the Thomas Play Pit such as designing a Thomas track and getting creative at the Thomas Creation Station.

To add to the summer fun, the event also features a miniature train ride and bouncy castle, tickets cost $3 per person and are purchased after entry to the Museum.

Much bigger than the Tidmouth sheds on the Island of Sodor, tour the real railway Workshops and see firsthand the restoration and maintenance of powerful steam locomotives. Enclosed footwear is required for the tours and they leave at regular intervals throughout the day.

The Workshops Rail Museum is part of the Queensland Museum and is winner of Australian and Queensland Tourism Awards for Heritage and Cultural Tourism.

Metro Manager Settles into Role - Metro Hotel Ipswich International

NEW Metro Hotel Ipswich International general manager Ted Matthews has high hopes for Ipswich's marquee hotel.

Mr Matthews took the reins at the Metro Hotel last week after 25 years in the hotel industry, which has taken him from Adelaide Travelodge to the Ridges in Cairns and Touraust Hotels in Sydney - and he is still passionate about the industry.

As travelling becomes more affordable, Mr Matthews said hotel guests were becoming more aware of what to expect from a quality hotel.

He said in his experience the expectations held by guests had not changed greatly.

"I don't think it has changed. People still like a quality experience, as if they belong here, things they don't get at home and they want to be comfortable in where they are staying."

He hopes the Metro Hotel continues to meet the demands set by its guests.

"I enjoy the challenges working with people brings, and I'm always looking to learn and teach those who work with me," he said.

"No two days are the same and planning can be very difficult, as you never know what will happen."

Ipswich Hotel Reviews: Ipswich Hotel Guest Review - Metro Hotel Ipswich International

I would like to comment on one of your staff member's costumer service.
Erin, from platform 9 severed us Sunday last week, the 20th of november. We found her polite and enthusiastic. The service was so good compared to other places we have decided to make a visit to platform 9 weekly. When we returned we were greeted with warm smile, and she even remembered our orders.

Customer service like this is now quite rare, and we believe people like Erin should be recongnised.

Thankyou,

Jaunita Johnston

Inner Strength Major Weapon - Sports Awards Function at Metro Hotel Ipswich International

THE standing ovation Kurt Fearnley received at the annual Ipswich Sports Awards proved how meaningful his message was.

While the international achiever feels uncomfortable being called "inspirational", everyone in the Metro Hotel Ipswich International function room was captivated.

Australia's fearless wheelchair marathon racer motivated some of Ipswich's most promising teenagers as he spoke about using self belief as a powerful weapon.

His story about crawling the Kokoda Trail - through the jungle mud and roots in 2009 - left his audience with goosebumps.

Born without the lower portion of his spine, Fearnley completed the 96km trek in 11 days.

How he defied a different set of challenges to finish second in the recent New York Marathon also highlighted his single-minded focus.

When race leader Fearnley's steering cable snapped 20km into the marathon, he had three choices.

The Paralympics gold medallist could quit, simply try to finish the 42km race, or battle on knowing he was likely to crash.

The sports awards guest speaker made his decision as quickly as he propels his wheelchair.

"A wheelchair is made to go fast but it's made to go forward," Fearnley said, having won the New York race four times.

"Everything in that wheelchair is made to go straight. The only thing that will get you around the corner is the steering.

"When that steering fell apart on me, I didn't really know what to do."

However, Fearnley revealed how a voice in his head willed him on.

"How am I going to do it? How do I win this race now," said Fearnley, 30.

"There was something inside me just screaming at myself to keep going the whole way."

Fearnley's motto when the going gets tough is to find courage within.

He's proven that by winning 33 marathons.

"In every marathon I've been in, everything is stripped away," he said.

"Physically you strip every layer away and then you realise who you are.

"That voice is telling you where I'll stop. You will be challenged and you will make it to the finish."

After completing the race in second spot, Fearnley threw up for two hours and dry retched in his hotel for 45 minutes.

But the determination to push himself to the brink is what makes the five-time world champion a remarkable athlete.

After sharing how he discovered his inner strength on the Kokoda Trail, Fearnley returned to sport where next year's London Paralympics are his next major goal.

"I know exactly what I want," the 2004 Athens 5000m and marathon gold medallist said.

"I know exactly where I'll be to the square metre. I'll be lining up on September 9 outside Buckingham Palace.

"I know that I want to come home with a gold medal - to be world champion and Paralympics champion after 12 consecutive years.

"And I know exactly what I need to do to get there. That is work harder than everyone else."

Crowds Enjoy Cup Day at Metro Hotel Ipswich International

IPSWICH was party central on Melbourne Cup day yesterday, with the city's major venues turning on a day to remember for race fans.

The reaction of North Booval's Tracey Mullin in Brothers Leagues Club was a giveaway that she had won big on Dunaden in the Melbourne Cup. How much she won was a morsel of information Ms Mullin wasn't prepared to share.

Enjoying the Melbourne Cup lunch at the Metro Hotel Ipswich International are (from left) Katrina Johnson, of Deebing Heights, Alex Mackey, of Burbank, and Emily Wonka.

"I won last year fairly big and someone stole the money from me, so I'm going to keep how much I won to myself," she grinned.

"It is the only time of the year that I bet. The dresses are fantastic and the atmosphere is fantastic. Everyone is here for a good time.

"I've had a ball ... great company and great food."

Ms Mullin said she sensed there was less money being bet by patrons this year.

"I think people are betting less this year. They are a bit more conservative this year and maybe a bit unsure," she said.

Friends Virginia Fenwick and Duane Cleary were both also celebrating cup wins on Dunaden at Brothers Leagues Club when the QT visited.

Mr Cleary was celebrating a 100% record for the day.

"I only bought one ticket ... and I won," he said.

"Now we'll go and see how much I've won. It is all about having a bit of fun."

Ms Fenwick said she didn't have time to study the form but liked the look of number three (Dunaden).

With a few tickets in her hand it looked as though she was set for a few more handy wins on a day she had marked down on the calendar.

"Melbourne Cup, everyone stops for it. I'm having a great day," she said.

Dunaden's jockey, Christophe Lemaire, had arrived in Australia 24 hours before the race after Craig Williams lost an appeal to keep the ride.

He shed tears when judges told him the verdict.

"It's incredible - it's a great moment for me," Lemaire said.

"I was a bit anxious. I knew it was very close.

"I feel very sorry for Craig. He's a good friend of mine."

Dunaden edged out England's Red Cadeaux by the smallest margin in the $6.2 million race.

It was the closest finish in the 151-year history of the race, with German horse Lucas Cranach completing an international trifecta. Americain, the 2010 winner, started favourite and finished fourth.

Melbourne Cup Race: Glam Up For Cup - Metro Hotel Ipswich International Melbourne Cup Fashion Glipse

THE Metro Hotel Ipswich International might be two states away from Flemington Racecourse but that won't stop them dressing for the occasion.

As part of the Metro's annual Melbourne Cup celebrations, the hotel will be running a fashion parade with clothes from Ipswich store House of Amy.

The event, which is already sold out, will be raising money for the Ipswich Hospital Foundation.

Metro Hotel guest relations manager Fran Edney said the hotel's Melbourne Cup lunch was becoming a tradition for some locals.

"This is the third year we've held it and the second we've sold out, but this time we've sold out much earlier than before," she said.

"People just love it though.

"It always gets a really good rap."

While this year's event won't have the popular guinea pig races of last year, Ms Edney promised some other entertainment that was still under wraps.

"We'll have some great entertainment, not everything has been decided yet but there are some big plans."

Even though fashion parades have always been part of the Metro's Melbourne Cup festivities, this is the first year they've showed off the clothes of House of Amy.

"I went in there and just fell in love with everything," Ms Edney said.

House of Amy owner Amy Winks is an award-winning designer and studied in Paris on a scholarship from the Australian Student Awards.

The parade will be showing some of the store's latest fashions, including '60s-inspired skirts, tassels and the many hats and fascinators stocked.

The festivities will kick off at noon and run until 3pm on Tuesday November 1.

The Metro Hotel Ipswich International is far from the only venue hosting an event, with celebrations occurring throughout Ipswich.

What's On Ipswich: Melbourne Cup at Metro Hotel Ipswich International

Where better to see the latest fashions for the track then at the Metro Hotel Ipswich International on Melbourne Cup day fashion parade by The House of Amy Ipswich.

Be charmed by key trends hitting our racetracks this Spring.

How better to describe classic and quality than the word LACE. Antique style lace returns in all its glamour and will be a prominent feature through Spring 2011 and Winter 2012. Traditional needle or bobbin lace stealing the limelight, wider nets, unique patters and sturdy fabrics are featured in skirts, dresses, tops. Shapes are simple and elegant.

The 60’s lady – Miss Dior silhouettes are still a strong focus this season. Fuller skirts, long midi length pencil skirts that taper to the calf. Forget the mod 60’s we are not doing miniskirts and tiny shift dresses. This look is elegant. Bright fresh colours and pastels, prints such as floral and stripes that are bold and fruity will be seen. The House of Amy has already ordered ranges for next year’s Ipswich Cup and we have this look covered!

Luxury Trims Return – The Tassel

Tassels have been used throughout history as symbols of status from military to religious, from personal adornment to furnishings. 17th century France had a boom industry in manufacturing handmade tassels representing wealth, power and opulence.

Our global instability has awakened a desire for small luxuries, and our appreciation for craftsmanship and quality has matured. We see luxury as craftsmanship a perfect adornment such as the tassel or antique inspired lace is a statement. The connotation of opulence in good taste. Quality is key when it comes to the tassel, an understated sense of luxury and authenticity. Tassels will be seen adorning handbags, shoes, belts, hats and garments and will be in a range of materials from rope to silk, beads to leather.

Pleats are Back and Here to Stay..

The most dominant pleats are knife pleats which are single pleats that all go in the same direction, and sunray pleats which are knife pleats that are cut to start smaller and get wider flaring to the hem.

Pleats will be prominent in sheer lightweight fabrics that are flowing and ethereal. Fabrics such as sheer crepes and silk tulles are hot. Lengths in dresses and skirts vary and you will see pleats in 70’s revival maxi skirts and dresses through to the 1920’s flapper look.

Classic Black and White…Always a favourite

Different combinations will be seen! All black, all white, spots, stripes, black on white, white on black…always a winner.

Spring has seen a burst of colour with reds, oranges and green prominate. Colour blocking will be popular trackside with clever matching of solid colour in outfits. You will see red and orange together, blue and green together, and purple and yellow. This is a strong statement look with styles very minimalist in cut.

Fascinators and Hats

The most important adornment for a trackside woman. Choose a colour that compliments your outfit and doesn’t overpower the total finished look. If choosing a plain black fascinator or hat add a few extra feathers or ribbon in a colour that is featured in your outfit, it is important that your headwear ties back with your outfit to achieve a polished finished look.

The House of Amy is showcasing exclusively to the Ipswich International Hotels Melbourne Cup Day ranges that will be in store for Next years Ipswich Cup. Labels will include Lemonade on the Lawn, Ruby Valentine, Studibaker and Darling. These ranges are not even in production yet and will be instore Feb, March 2012. We will also be showcasing a designer range of Millenery by local milln

From Critical Stages and Jo Thomas, Often I Find That I Am Naked by Fiona Sprott is a rich, wickedly funny piece of cabaret-theatre. It takes a comic and brutal look at single life for an Australian woman, reflecting stories from popular culture and wedged within the romantic comedy genre of hits such as Sex and the City and Bridget Jones Diary.

Speed dating, Facebook, text sex, RSVP, a private detective, STD clinics, rehab... so many tools available for the modern single woman looking to meet Mr Right! The problem is just how many Mr Wrongs make a Right?

Metro Hotel Ipswich International hosts Gala Flood Benefit - Metro Hotels

Metro Hotel Ipswich International will host a Gala Cocktail Event on March 16, 2011 to raise much needed funds to help Ipswich recover from the devastating floods that ravaged the city.

As a vital member of the Ipswich community, Metro Hotel Ipswich International is keen to help families and businesses get back on their feet by hosting a Gala Benefit, with all funds going directly into the Ipswich Mayor’s Flood Appeal.
Alex van Kersen, Metro Hotel Ipswich International General Manager, said tickets to the gala event were just $100 each, with all funds raised on the night going directly to benefit those who needed it most.
“As the waters recede in the Ipswich region, there's a sense of optimism, resilience and camaraderie in the Ipswich community,” Mr van Kersen said. “Our aim is to raise a significant amount of money to be put directly back into our community and help the city and its people to get back to a normal life as quickly as possible.”

Mr van Kersen said he hoped 400 people would attend the Gala Cocktail Event on 16 March, with former Brisbane Broncos star Shane Webcke booked in as Master of Ceremonies and Australian Idol finalist Paulini, lauded as one of the finest vocalists Australia has produced, providing the evening’s entertainment.

Mayor of Ipswich Paul Pisasale will be among the special guests, and an impressive range of auction items have been donated from local and national businesses such as Coca Cola and Yalumba Wines, celebrities such as 2010 Bathurst winner Mark Scaife, tennis legend Pat Cash, and the Dick Johnson and Jack Daniels racing teams. Rugby league clubs Parramatta Eels, Westside Tigers, Penrith Panthers and Canterbury Bulldogs have also contributed memorabilia.
